Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

An Academy fundraising meeting was held on May 14th. Along with tuition and donations, fundraising is our main source of keeping SPPA operating.  It is important that everyone play a part in making these events successful.  The following are several opportunities to become involved with over the next few months.

The next Academy fundraiser is the Luau, scheduled at Koenig Park for Saturday, June 28th. Volunteers from the Academy are still needed to help organize, promote and work this event.

As school will be out at this time, you are asked to sign up now if you are available to help in any way. Please see the detailed insert in the family envelope. Tickets are also on sale now by contacting Jackie at jackiehonebrink@yahoo.com or Michelle at bdaddy@fuse.net.

Another fundraiser planned for this summer is the 4th of July booth at Koenig Park. If you can provide baked goods or sell glow sticks, please contact Terri Sweeney at tsweeney34@hotmail.com

Planning ahead, the Family Picnic is scheduled at Koenig Park big pavilion on Friday, August 22nd. This tradition is planned to coincide with and celebrate the first week of school. Ten volunteers are needed to chair several different committees – set-up, clean-up, food, drinks, advertising, entertainment, etc. If you are interested in helping with this fun event, please contact Terri Sweeney as listed previously or contact the website at webmaster@sppacademy.org

Also in the planning stages are some new fundraising ideas: A monthly raffle and a walk-a-thon in September. So stay tuned and look for emails this summer. If you are not receiving emails periodically from the Academy, please sign in as a guest at the website: www.SPPAcademy.org

That way you can keep updated this summer with what is happening.

Again, a huge THANK YOU! to all our volunteers for the help and support they have given the children of the Academy this year! The strong volunteer spirit brings us all closer and promotes community. It fosters pride in our school and furthers our mission at SPPA.

Notice –

Anyone wishing to babysit this summer may leave their information at the Academy office for interested parents who call.

Memorial Day ParadeParents, students, friends of the Academy are asked to join in the Reading Memorial Day Parade. We will be lining up at Mueller's parking lot, by the railroad tracks in Lockland, no later than 9am Monday morning.  The MND Dance team and Vonderhaar's truck will be meeting there as well.  Everyone is encouraged to join in this 2nd year tradition. Please wear your Spirit Wear and walk with pride!

Art Show

Students have been reminded for the past 4-5 months to keep their paintings, drawings and creations for the Art Show in May. Now each student is asked to choose and bring in ONE of their favorite pieces created this year in Art Class.

Students are asked to please turn in their favorite masterpiece on Monday, May 19th to Mrs. Harsch during their Art time. She will take the art and further prepare it for display. The Art Show will be on exhibit in the school during the Volunteer Appreciation night on Thursday, May 22nd. Everyone is invited to view the beautiful Art created by the students.

Reds Game Field Trip

With the end of the school year drawing to a close so quickly, plans are being arranged for the Reds Game Field Trip. This new Academy tradition is going to be a little different.

Parents (grandparents, guardians) and their children will be invited to participate in this Field Trip.

The Reds game is Sunday, June 1st at 1:15pm against the Atlanta Braves. There is a promotion that day of  “Run the Bases” and Floppy Reds cap give away for the first 10,000 kids under 14 years of age. Tickets are $7 (or $13) each and will be grouped together in the Bleachers. There is no refund if you cannot attend.

The group will be meeting at the Academy parking lot and will be carpooling to the game. No Bus. The trip will take place after school and therefore the Academy holds no responsibility for the student. A parent or guardian who is responsible for their child will need to attend the game and be with the child for the field trip.

Kick off the summer vacation with some good old-fashioned fun! Socialize with other Academy families in the school parking lot before and after the game.

Wear your Academy Spiritwear!

Parent’s Club Elections -

As there were not enough people able to attend the Tuesday night meeting, elections will be held with a write in vote through the Family Envelope.

Officers are needed for the following:

President: Duties include attending and running all meetings.

Vice-President: Duties include taking over responsibilities of President when not available.

Secretary: Duties include attending all meetings and taking minutes.

Please write in your suggestion for officers. Names of nominees may be sent to office through the Family envelope or directly to Lori Becker. Your vote will need to be returned in the envelope the next day, May 23rd. Votes will be tallied and officers for next year’s Parent’s Club will be announced before year end.

Volunteer Appreciation Night

To thank all of our volunteers, a night of pizza, drinks and desserts is being planned for Thursday, May 22nd at 6:30pm directly following the Rosary at 6pm. Grandma Audrey has been asked to help host the evening, which will be held in the Cafeteria. So if you would like to help, please contact Audrey Stites at astites@speakingofwomenshealth.com.

Also on the agenda that night is to introduce next year’s principal, Mrs. Glenda Donnelly. Please mark your calendars to attend. Anyone who has volunteered at The Academy in any capacity is invited to be present at this “Thank You” night.

Field Day

A tradition from the former SPPS that was brought with us to the Academy is Field Day. Close to the end of the school year, the children would play games outside under the direction of the graduating 8th graders. We are continuing this tradition at SPPA on Tuesday, May 27th. The children will be treated to a Pizza, chips and pop lunch provided by Parent’s Club. Field Day will start after lunch. Students will play games and run relay races. Mrs. Riley is also planning a special obstacle course challenge. There will also be activities planned in the gym, so the children don’t get too hot outside. Children will end the day with a popsicle treat provided by Parent’s Club

Parents are invited to help and join in the fun. Students are allowed to be in Spiritwear for the day.

8th Grade Graduation -

Graduation plans are being finalized. Father Joe Binzer will preside over the Graduation Mass, which is being held in the Sts. Peter and Paul Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, May 28th at 7pm. First Holy Eucharist

Seven children from second grade received the Sacrament of the Eucharist on Sunday, May 4th.

SPPA students along with children from Sts. Peter and Paul PSR class and children from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Elementary school made the Sacrament together. Mrs. Kathy Baker from OLSH, Deacon Tom Lynd, Father Michael Leshney, Mrs. Shelly Cummins and Mrs. Brenda Hubble helped prepare the children to receive the sacrament.

The Lord blessed the day with sunshine and blue skies. Children posed by the Parish sign before going into the church.

Wearing their blue suits and carrying their swords, the Knights of St. John led the 18 children into Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Parents, friends and relatives proudly snapped pictures of the procession. Father Mike and Deacon Tom celebrated the sacrament. During the Mass, children were invited up around the Altar. It was a precious moment for each child that followed as they received Jesus in the form of bread and wine, a moment they have been anticipating for a long time.

Each child was accompanied by their parents or loved one to the Altar individually, before the congregation lined up to receive Communion.

As the church emptied into the courtyard, children greeted family and friends. Laughter and congratulations were shared amongst the group. It was a special day, one that was celebrated by many in the community. The SPPA First Holy Communicants were given the day off of school on Monday, May 5th , a tradition that was continued from the old school. Congratulation to Dillon, Bart, Nick, Blaise, Brady, Katie and Chas!

Washington, DC Trip

The 7th & 8th grade field trip was a wonderful educational experience. There is not enough room to write about everything the students saw and visited while in Washington. One of the highlights was the VIP tour of the Capital Building ending with a visit by Congressman, Steve Chabot. Congressman Chabot had just arrived back in Washington, but made it a point to take time to talk with the students from SPPA. Being from Reading himself and having formerly attended the South Reading Elementary School, which is now the home of Sts. Peter and Paul Academy, gave the group an instant connection. Thanks to Steve Chabot for taking time to speak with the students and chaperones.

So many things worked out flawlessly on the tour, that guide - Joyce Tami, said she had never seen a tour in all of her 9 years as a guide in DC, go so perfectly. Everyone was always on time everywhere the group went, it just worked out smoothly.

Even with a few wrong turns here and there, our bus driver still managed to get us to our destinations on time or early. She was also very impressed with the knowledge of our 7th & 8th graders for every question she asked them.  Our guide said that most of her tours are for other 8th graders and that it is a normal part of their curriculum to come to DC.

Another of the highlights of the tour was Arlington National Cemetery. Besides walking through part of the 612 acres of white grave markers and visiting John F. Kennedy's gravesite with the eternal flame, witnessing the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknowns was powerful for the students. Watching the Sentinels inspection before being allowed to come on duty was very impressive.

Even though the itinerary for the trip was filled with certain memorials, museums and sites to see, there was a couple of hours where the group could decide which particular Smithsonian museum they would like to visit. It was during this time that many decided to wait in line and visit the National Archives, where they viewed the Declaration of Independence, Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights, among other important documents.  The White House, Washington Monument, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, Vietnam and Korean War memorials are just a few more of the sites visited on this learning experience. Watching the movie "National Treasure" on the way home on the bus was a lot more meaningful after having just been there. Added to the itinerary were 2 beautiful and meaningful stops: The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the 8th largest church in the world, where Pope Benedict XVI had just visited and St. Matthews Cathedral, where JFK’s funeral Mass was held. If you would like to see more photos and read all about it, please visit the schools website: www.sppacademy.org

Sts. Peter and Paul Academy Newsletter   April 24, 2008

Dear SPPA Families,

On Friday, May 9th, a representative from the Ohio Department of Education will be coming to SPPA to conduct our final “walk through”.  The process to apply to the State to become a chartered school in Ohio began back in May 2007.  Since last May, we have successfully accomplished a variety of steps to get to this point.  This representative will be reviewing files (teachers and students), ensure we have performed all emergency procedures, review a variety of SPPA forms and brochures, as well as tour our facility to make sure we have a safe, clean and secure building.  This is the last step.  By successfully “passing” this walk through, SPPA will be an official school in the eyes of the State.  This is what we have been working for over the last year!

We are asking for your help in preparing for this very important meeting!  We would like to have a large group cleaning session on Thursday evening, May 8th beginning at 6:30pm following the Rosary at 6pm.  We would like to get the grounds spruced up as well.

Please bring gardening tools, cleaning supplies and your SPPA Spirit! Please bring you students so they can help with this effort. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on May 8th!

Sheila

Spotlight on Education

4th Grade by Mrs. Kennedy

The fourth grade class has spent the past several months learning about Ohio.  We've explored Ohio's early Native American settlers, and the students have researched and reported on the various Native American groups who once called Ohio home.  The students even created wonderful artifacts to represent the Native American group which he/she researched.  The students have investigated Ohioans' roles in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

The students have also explored the development of transportation methods in our state, from macadam roads to canals and railroads.  The students have been very interested in discovering the different immigrant and religious groups that settled in Ohio.  Currently, the class is learning about Ohio's goods and services and how Ohio is interdependent with other states and countries.   We are also taking a look at Ohio's government and learning about past United States Presidents from Ohio.
As part of our study of Ohio, the students are each researching an Ohio "hero."  We are using Rick Sowash's book, Heroes of Ohio.  Each student has chosen a different "hero" to research.  The students will be presenting his/her research to the class as his/her chosen hero.
As a grand finale to our study of Ohio, the class is planning a field trip to the Cincinnati History Museum on May 2.  The students are looking forward to this trip.

Empty Halls-

The 7th & 8th graders left for Washington, DC on Monday morning.

Sts. Peter and Paul Academy Newsletter     April 17, 2008

Dear SPPA Families,

As we head into the final 6 weeks of school, there are many fun and exciting events to look forward to.  One of those events many of you may not be aware of is the 20th Anniversary Settlement Day Dinner sponsored by the Reading Historical Society (RHS).  This event takes place Friday, May 16th.  Each year RHS recognizes a Reading business, a civic organization and one outstanding community member for their contributions to the Valley.

This year, Bonnie Rack is being recognized for her commitment and service to the Reading community.  I think it would be awesome if as many SPPA families as possible were there to support her when she receives this award.  You must purchase tickets prior to the event.  Adults are $15 each and children (12 and under) are $5.  This includes a full catered meal by Vonderhaars, drinks and dessert.  Please contact Terri Kelsey (554-2133) or Jim Lichtenberg (733-5289) for more information or to purchase your tickets.  Be sure to wear your SPPA spiritwear!

Hope to see you on the 16th-

Sheila Lichtenberg

Computer Class

Mrs. Nicole Burke teaches computer class on Wednesdays and Fridays each week to all students at SPPA. Mrs. Burke, who formerly worked at GE as a Desktop Technician for 8 years, brings her knowledge to the classroom.  She not only teaches computer, she, along with the help of other dedicated parents, also set up the computer lab this past summer and continues to use her spare time to keep our school network up and running smoothly. If ever there is a problem, Mrs. Burke quickly takes care of it.  Not only does Mrs. Burke volunteer her time in computer class, she also gladly picks up recess duty for the teachers on the days she teaches. We want to take this time to thank Mrs. Burke for all she does at Sts. Peter and Paul Academy.

Mrs. Burke is teaching a variety of topics in class this quarter, including keyboarding, Internet research, Microsoft Publisher and Excel. She is focusing a lot of effort on coordinating an Internet Safety lesson for all of the students.

Mrs. Burke has created a wonderful addition to the curriculum at SPPA with the computer lab. She has designed a class that the children look forward to each week. She has an environment, which empowers students by incorporating her teaching with the technology of the future. Thanks Mrs. Burke!

Walking in Jesus’ Footsteps

Under the direction of our Religious Director, Mrs. Marlene Henkel, and with the help of Mrs. Shelley Cummins, the 2nd & 3rd grade class prepared a recent prayer service. In a reading from Corinthians, the students were given a good example of how to treat their neighbor. As they learn to walk with Jesus, the children were asked if they could recognize Jesus in other people.

The prayer service included paragraphs by the children, such as the one featured below which was written by Alex Poynter.

Mrs. Hubble is a person who loves the students in our school by always taking time to help them when they come to the office with a problem or if they just need to talk about something. When she does this the person she is talking to starts to smile or begins to feel better. This makes me think Mrs. Hubble is walking in Jesus’ footsteps because Jesus always took time for people no matter how busy he was.  He said let the children come and see me and I will take care of them.

Physical Education Class

Mrs. Teresa Riley is one of the most popular teachers at SPPA. When Mrs. Burke asked students in computer class to draw and write what their favorite thing was about Sts. Peter and Paul Academy, many of them mentioned Gym and Mrs. Riley. Mrs. Riley just smiles and takes it in stride, as she has taught some of these children since they were 3 and 4 years old, in her class at Serendipity pre-school.

Mrs. Riley uses her many years of participation in basketball, softball and running to help guide her teaching the children in gym.

When asked what she would like to talk about for this column, Mrs. Riley said, “We’re starting to practice for the Presidential Fitness Test for the next few weeks. The test is coming up at the end of the month. We are running and doing sit ups. Next year I want to explore another program called Presidential Champions where the families become involved in activities together with the students. It encourages children and their families to be active outside of school. You would get to keep record of hours spent at activities such as soccer or baseball or walking with your family.” Thanks Mrs. Riley! The SPPA community appreciates all that you do to keep the students healthy!

What’s New?

Suzie Bateman is chairing a SPPA fundraiser for Mother’s Day.  After the wonderful success with the Poinsettia sale at Christmas, it was decided to hold a second flower sale with the same florist before the end of the year. SPPS Alumni, Kathy Theis, of Northgate Nursery, grows the most beautiful flowers and everyone loved the poinsettias she supplied at Christmas. Items for sale for Mother’s Day will include flowering hanging baskets and clay pots with geraniums.

Suzie plans on holding a contest between classes at SPPA to see who can sell the most. She will donate a pizza party for lunch for the winning class. Flyers for the sale are scheduled to go home in the family envelope April 17th  with more details. The sale will last 2 weeks and will end Friday, May 2nd. Pick-up will be in the cafeteria on May 10th , the day before Mother’s Day.  Please keep this in mind when you are thinking of a beautiful gift for your mom!

Vision / Hearing Screening

Our School Nurse, Mrs. Terri Gertz-Kelsey, will be conducting Vision and Hearing Screenings with grades 3, 5 and 7 over the next 2 weeks. The screening results will go in the student’s permanent file. She will report her findings to the parents through a note home only if further evaluation is needed.

Both tests are required by the state to be done in the Fall and in the Spring, along with anytime a teacher requires it. Thanks Nurse Kelsey!

Project Linus will be finished during Family Time this Friday.  It would be appreciated if anyone would like to volunteer to stay after school for a short time to “tie up any loose ends.”

From the Office

Dear Families and Friends,

I hope everyone had a safe and blessed Easter.  The children returned to school with a lot of smiles.  I personally enjoy your children and want to continue teaching and working with them.  Many of us have started to plan for the next school year, and I have given a lot of thought to some new programs, particularly for our preparing 6-8th graders for high school.  One of the programs I have been “mentally” developing, possibly to be titled, “My Advancement Plan”, will focus on several key areas of academic achievement by learning how to study more effectively, improve their literacy and comprehension,  and socially develop their sense of community by participating in out-reach programs and being of service to others.  The goal of  this program would require the student to “apply” for graduation, demonstrating what they have achieved should be awarded with advancement.

Stay tuned and enjoy the Spring!

Sincerely,

Mary Lehrter

Spanish Class

Children at Sts. Peter and Paul are privileged to be able to take a foreign language from Kindergarten through 8th grade as part of their regular academic schedule. Many schools offer this extra curricular at an extra fee. However at SPPA, we are blessed with a wonderful Spanish teacher, Mrs. Sara Schenz, who donates her time, talent and treasures in teaching. Mrs. Schenz has a combined 9 years of education in French and Spanish and a BA in Russian. “It simply makes me happy to share my love of languages with the students,” said Mrs. Schenz.

Ms. Hesse was thoroughly impressed when Kindergarteners came back to class saying, “Hola!¿Como esta?”

“They will continue to build on this base every year,” said Ms. Hesse. K- 4th  grades are offered age appropriate activities that help build basic vocabulary skills. With 5th – 8th grades, Mrs. Schenz focuses on intensive grammar work. This is an added bonus, as now all high schools require 2 years of a foreign language to get into college.

All classes will work together to decorate the school for Cinco de Mayo. Gracias Senora Schenz!

Looking Ahead

The months of April and May will pass quickly and before you know it, our inaugural year at SPPA will just be a memory.

Some of the activities still in the planning stages for our final quarter are a Spelling Bee, an Art Show, a Grandparents Day and Volunteer Appreciation Day, participating in Earth Day clean-up, planting trees on Arbor Day and burying a time capsule. Also many of the classes will be taking their field trips now that spring has sprung. Another warmer weather tradition that is being organized is the field trip to an afternoon Reds game. Of course planning is also starting for our first Graduation.

If you have any ideas, please put them in the suggestion box, call the office 761-7772, email the website at webmaster@sppacademy.org or just show up at the Parent’s Club meeting this Thursday evening at 6:30pm.

Let your voice be heard to help make history here at SPPA.

What’s New?

WELCOME BACK! Time to Go!

As well as working hard in the classroom, the 7th and 8th graders at SPPA have been endeavoring to raise money for their class trip to Washington, D.C.  They are having their 3rd Jr. High dance this Friday, April 4th. The students also had fundraisers at Skyline, Maloney’s and Augie’s. Students recently sold raffle tickets on 2 weekends at Evendale Walmart. The drawing was held April 1st. Winning the grand prize of a Playstation 3, was Tony Colwell.       . Winning the 2nd place Ipod was J. Hill. The third place prize of $25 cash was won by Savannah Notke, who generously donated it back to the fundraiser. Students plan on having a car wash in the near future. Watch for more details to come.

The much anticipated field trip is the first of its kind for SPPA. The students will be on the field trip from April 21st – 24th. They are going to be seeing many museums and monuments in our nation’s capital, as well as a VIP tour of the Capital building, thanks to John Boehner.

Bon Voyage!

Notice Posted March 19th

To our wonderful SPPA families, friends and supporters- the school is dry! Thanks first, to God for holding back the creek. Thanks next, to the hard working, selfless volunteers who worked into the wee hours of the morning securing the school, inside and out.

Thanks to those who placed emergency phone calls and to those who prayed.

Thanks to everyone for the part that you played in this episode of our history.

What's next?

First, our prayers go up for everyone in the community who has suffered a loss because of the rains, especially St. Michael's in Sharonville.

Next, the plan is for Spring Cleaning at the Academy. Since everything is up off the floor, it's a good time to clean and get ready for the final quarter. For those volunteers who would like to help, the Academy will open at 9am.

Terri Kelsey is also planning on dying Easter Eggs for the St. Francis Soup Kitchen on Saturday morning starting at 11:30. The Linus project will also be available for those wishing to make the tie blankets.

What an ample opportunity for community service right before Easter. The Academy will be open for a few hours Saturday morning if you would like to join in. Everyone is welcome and appreciated!

Happy Easter!
