Dear SPPA Parents,

Spring Break is just around the corner.  The students and faculty have been anxiously waiting, actually counting down the hours for the end of the day on Thursday.  Although we all love to see each other on a daily basis, it will be wonderful to have some time off to recoup our energy for the hectic schedule from now until the end of the year.  It will be a busy time for everyone.

Spring Break is always thought of as time off and vacation.  Let us not forget that our time of rest begins with the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord.  Take time to be thankful for everything God has given us.

How numerous, O Lord, my

God, You have made Your

wondrous deeds!  And in Your

plans for us there is none to

equal You.  Should I wish to

declare or tell them, too many

Are they to recount

Dear SPPA Parents,

Spring break is quickly approaching and our days are busier than ever.  The Kindergarten class has baby chicks cheeping, the primary classes are gearing up to see the play “Charlotte’s Web”, and  we  are all preparing for our day long retreat on Holy Thursday.  Adding to the excitement of spring arriving and the much anticipated time off, we had a break in.  However, all is well.   As always, the students and faculty handled the situation with ease.

INTRODUCING -- COMMUNITY SAFE ACCOUNT

I am pleased to introduce the Community Safe account to you as a new way of communicating important information, school closings, crisis situations, major upcoming events, etc.     This account has been set up thanks to the generosity of the Baldauf Family.

We will have a test run of this system tonight (Thursday 4-2) at 7:00pm.  If you do not receive a phone call please call the school and let us know.   You can add a number or delete a number if you need to do so.   This system will not accept extension numbers.  If you have a work number with an extension, we cannot call that number.  If your number changes, contact the office immediately.

FIRST MONTHLY RAFFLE WINNER

$150.00 winner is Cheri Morgan

  $50.00 winner is Alice Dunaway

CONGRATULATIONS!  Your name has been put back in the pot for the next drawing.

RAFFLE REMINDER

There seemed to be some misunderstanding regarding the Raffle ticket turn in times.  Raffle tickets can still be bought and sold. The raffle is ongoing for a full calendar year.   If you turned in unsold tickets, they are being given back to you to continue selling.  We have until the end of February 2010 to sell all 20 tickets.

If you need more tickets please call Brenda at the school or Terri Sweeney at 470-8940.  The next drawing will take place on or about May 1st.   All tickets must be turned in on the last day of the month to be eligible for that month’s drawing.  Again, anyone selling 50 tickets will get out of cleaning the school for one turn.  Mrs. Morgan has sold her 50 tickets and the Baldaufs have sold 60!  WOW!!  Congratulations.  To get out of cleaning the school this school year you must sell your 50 by the end of April.

I need to stress again the importance of meeting our goal for this fundraiser.  Fundraising is the way we keep our tuition at the affordable rate that we have.  It costs much more than the tuition we charge to educate our children.  We have another $5000 to go on this fundraiser.  We can meet this goal easily if we each sell our 20 tickets (or more).

KEEP CINCINNATI BEAUTIFUL

Once again we are participating in the National Program designed to keep our cities and country clean.  Please see the enclosed flyer and permission slip for more details.

AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING INFORMATION

Starting next Wednesday 4-8 students staying for after school tutoring will be picked up at the back door of the cafeteria where they are dropped off in the morning.   I would also like to say that I feel this program is working great.  The kids work hard and get a lot accomplished.  The tutors are excellent.  Thanks to everyone who attend and help.

SPRING PICTURES

It is time for Spring Pictures with Lifetouch Photography.  Please see the enclosed flyer for more information.  Eighth grade will be having their official 8th grade group and individual pictures on that day also.   The picture date is April 21st.

BOX TOP WINNERS FOR 3RD QUARTER

Mrs. Kennedy’s class is the winner of the Box Top contest for 3rd Quarter with a total of $97.63.  Congratulations to them.  They are still working out the details of what they will receive as the winning class.

MRS. DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

MARCH 25, 2009

,-.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Due to the report cards going home today and no school on Friday, the newsletter is a day early.  First I would like to thank everyone who attended the State of the School meeting last night.  We are all very busy keeping up with our children, our jobs, and our own lives.  It is difficult to make time for everything.  Due to time constraints today, I will write a summary for next week’s newsletter.

CONGRATULATIONS TO AMANDA FREEL

Amanda has won the St. Paul Commandery #59 Scholarship for next year.  The scholarship committee was very impressed with her application and essay.  Amanda has chosen to attend Mount Notre Dame for high school.  Congratulations.!

WATER BOTTLES FOR GYM

Now that the weather has warmed up, the students need to stay hydrated during gym class.  Students are allowed to bring a water bottle to class with their name clearly marked on it.  It is preferred that they use a reusable water bottle with a pop up lid.

1ST DRAWING FOR THE MONTHLY RAFFLE

To be eligible for the 1st drawing for our new Monthly Raffle tickets must be turned in by Tuesday March 31st.  Good luck to all of you who have already entered.  (I think my name is in there enough time that perhaps I will be the first winner.)  On that note, Mrs. Morgan has almost reached her goal of selling 50 tickets to get out of cleaning the school for one time!  I know she has some competition in Gina Baldauf.  Is there anyone out there who will beat them to 50?

PARENT’S CLUB MEETING

The next Parent’s Club meeting will be held next Wednesday evening at 6:30.  Please make plans to attend.  This is a way of keeping up to date on school activities and events.  Debbie always has something exciting planned.

MRS. DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

MARCH 19, 2009

,-.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Tomorrow marks the end of the third quarter.  Our 8th grade students are daydreaming about being an official high school student in a very short time while the 7th grade students are already showing signs of being the leaders of the school.  Our Kindergarten students look and act like first graders.  Each class has grown in every way and now they are ready to make the final quarter the best for the transition to the next level.  Let’s applaud their efforts and continue to encourage them to do their best work.  This is a difficult time for them to stay focused and a critical time to be on target academically.

Our next Mass is scheduled for next Wednesday, March 25th with Fr. Heim.  This Mass will be dedicated to Mr. Tom Martin.   It is also the celebration of the Annunciation of the Lord.  The Mass is being planned by Mrs. Fraizer’s first grade class.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards will go home next Wednesday followed by Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday. There seems to be a little confusion about the conferences.  Letters were sent home indicating whether or not the teacher has requested a conference.  If the teacher does not feel a conference is necessary at this time you do not need to return the form However if you would like a conference please fill out the form and return it with a time block requested.  We will get in touch with you to schedule the exact time.  Conferences will take place in the cafeteria just like we did in October.

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY 3-27

Our hectic week will end Thursday after conferences.  There will be no school on Friday.  Enjoy your extra day off.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

The much talked about TRIVIA NIGHT is coming up  April 25th.  Please see the enclosed flyer for full details.

YANKEE CANDLE SALE

Don’t forget to talk to your friends and neighbors about the Yankee Candle Sale we have going on.  Yankee Candles are high quality and they offer a wide variety of fragrances.  Orders must be turned in by March 26th.  FYI – You do not have to add sales tax.

SPIRIT WEAR

The final Spirit wear order for this year will be placed at the end of this month.  Please send all order forms to the office as soon as possible.  Order forms are in the office.

CURVES FOOD DRIVE

As an area school we have been challenged to participate in the Curves Annual Food Drive.  All food will be donated to Valley Interfaith.  This is an activity we can participate in as a part of the Reading community.  It is an honor to be recognized by area businesses and asked to participate in community events.  The goal for this collection is 6000 lbs of non perishable food.  Let’s show them how much we care.  Send in your donations by next Thursday.

CHALLENGE FROM MRS. DONNELLY J

I challenge the classes!  The class to bring in the most food will have an out of uniform day.  At the end of next Thursday we will weigh all the food collected for each class to determine the winner.  Good luck!  Does anyone have scales to weigh the food?  Give me a call.  Thanks!

CLEANING NEWS

There has been a miscalculation about the number of times during the year you are needed to clean the building.  It has been discovered that each family will be cleaning the school building 5-6 times each instead of the 4 times originally indicated.  We are sorry for this inconvenience.  On a positive note, it looks like our enrollment will be increasing some for next year, so our number of times may go down to the original 4.  Let’s hope that is the case for many reasons.

CLEANING SCHEDULE

MRS. DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

MARCH 12, 2009

,-.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Winter keeps hanging on along with many illnesses.  It appears that the groundhog was right with his prediction of 6 more weeks of winter.  However, we do see signs of spring with crocuses in bloom, daffodils peeking through the ground and buds on trees beginning to appear.  Lent is a season of renewal with God giving us signs in nature of the renewal process.

FACULTY ADDITION

I am pleased to announce that we have a new music teacher for grades 3 through 8.  Mr. Rick Humphreys will be in the building each Wednesday afternoon teaching music as a volunteer. Mr. Humphreys has a degree in Music Education and has taught private lessons in voice and piano while applying his skill full time in music ministry for over 20 years.  He will be offering piano and/or voice lessons to anyone age 6 and older for a fee.  See the enclosed flyer for more details.  If you choose for your child to take private lessons, they may miss class for that lesson.  However, your child is responsible for all work  missed.  Mr. Humphreys will be working with the classroom teacher to create a schedule that works best for the student.

UNIFORM REMINDER

Parents and students please take a moment to look over the dress code on pages 9-10 of the student handbook.  For your convenience a copy of the dress code is enclosed.   Kindergarten through 5th grade students need to pay particular attention to the gym clothes section, intermediate students please note #4.  Students may wear dress shorts during the 4th quarter of the year.  Fourth quarter begins March 23rd.  However, if it is cold and the prediction is for the weather to remain cold (like today), please use common sense.

**IMPORTANT DATE**                      WEDNESDAY MARCH 18, 7:00PM

STATE OF THE SCHOOL ADDRESS

The State of the School Address will be held Wednesday March 18th at 7:00P.M. Child care will be provided by the Principal Corp.  Please call Mrs. Hubble with the number of children who will be in child care.  Each family will be given two hours of volunteer time for their attendance.

UNIFORM EXCHANGE

A uniform exchange will be held prior to the State of the School starting at 6:30.  It is first come first serve.  If you have uniforms that your children have outgrown that you no longer need please send them in to the office by Monday March 16th.  They will be sized and prepared for the uniform exchange.

THANK YOU FR. HOWARD

Fr. Howard from Sts. Peter and Paul Parish has offered to come to our school for our children to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  This is a very generous offer and we are grateful.  His first visit was yesterday with the Junior High students.

OUT OF UNIFORM

Students will be allowed to be out of uniform tomorrow for $1.00.  The money will be donated to Aubrey Rose Foundation.  Student Council has chosen March Madness as the theme for the day requesting that students wear their favorite college basketball spirit wear for the occasion.  If you do not have a favorite team or you do not have spirit wear for that team, students may wear SPPA school apparel.

There was a question about the new Raffle that started last week.  You are asked to sell 20 tickets once a year.  You may continue to sell all year if you choose.  Tickets go into the hat for a drawing once a month.  If your ticket is drawn, it is put back into the hat for the next month’s drawing.  Each ticket turned in has a chance of winning first place or second place 12 times if they are in the hat from the beginning.  Please feel free to call Mrs. Hubble if you have any questions.  First drawing will be April 1st.

Challenge – Mrs. Morgan has decided that she is going to sell 50 Raffle tickets so she will get out of cleaning the building one time.  How many others will meet that challenge?  Good Luck.

  MRS. DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

MARCH 5, 2009

,-.

Dear SPPA Parents,

March came in like a lion with cold and wind.  It is time for the lamb with warm air and sunshine. Spring brings many challenges.   The work load at school intensifies as the year end approaches.  The teachers are making sure each child is prepared for the next grade level.  Please help your children focus on their academics (their job) through to the end of the year.  They tend to get distracted with “other” things when the weather is warm and the days are longer.  Don’t forget the time “Springs” forward Saturday night.   We have Mass next Wednesday with Fr. Benzer presiding.  Make plans to join us!

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS  2+

Enclosed in your envelope is a letter from the Board of Directors.  Please take a few minutes to sit and read this letter.  There are some very important items discussed in the letter that will require your attention and action.  As stakeholders in this school, you are also caretakers.  Your involvement is necessary for continued success.  The State of the School Address is your meeting.  Child care will be provided by the Principal Corp if needed.

CONGRATULATIONS  VVV

Congratulations to our 8th grade class on their Confirmation held at the Cathedral in Cincinnati.  Confirmation denotes the responsibility of spreading the word of God through deed and word, continuing “the initiation of Baptism into the fullness of Christian life within the Church.”  (www.cin.org)  Our prayers are with you as you accept this responsibility.

CHARACTER EDUCATION WINNERS

Congratulations to our new Character Education winners for the month of February.  Sensitivity was the trait.  CJ Bateman, Nash Morgan and Dani Crisp will represent our school all month with a sign in their yard.  The trait for the month of March is Forgiveness.

THINK SPRING – THINK SCRIPS   $$$

This is a great time of year to purchase your Scrips cards.  When considering your spring purchases, such as Easter clothes, candy, flowers; think Scrips!  There is a long list of merchants who participate in the program.  Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, UDF and JC Penney’s are just a few examples.  This is a fund raiser that does not require you to sell anything or purchase anything you would not normally purchase; you just purchase a Scrip card first then the items.  It takes an extra step to purchase something but SPPA benefits financially from that extra step.  Make it a habit.  March orders are due to the office by March 13th.  Your cards will be sent home the following Thursday in the Family Envelope.

For a complete list visit the Great Lakes Scrips website at www.glscrip.com or contact Terri Sweeney at 326-1276 (daytime), 769-4239 (evening), or tsweeney34@hotmail.com.  Mrs. Hubble also has Scrips order forms in the office.

SPPA MONTHLY RAFFLE

SPPA is announcing the start of a new fundraising event effective this month.  See the black and red flyer in your envelope for complete details.  You have been issued 20 tickets to sell.  Please note the ticket numbers you have been given.  You are responsible for those tickets.  The money for the tickets should be returned to the school office in an envelope clearly marked Monthly Raffle.    This can be done at any time during the month.  Additional tickets will be given out only after the first 20 have been sold and the money returned.  If you have any questions please contact Terri Sweeney at 326-1276, 769-4239, or tsweeney34@hotmail.com.

REMINDER

The Yankee Candle Fundraiser permission slips need to be turned in.

SPRING UNIFORM EXCHANGE

March 18th at the State of the School Address, a table will be set up for your convenience to exchange uniforms that no longer fit or to trade in long pants for short pants.  Shorts can be worn starting March 23rd – 4th quarter.  Please keep in mind that as your children grow taller, their shorts grow shorter.  Have them try on their shorts prior to the day they plan to wear them.  Check the student handbook for guidelines.

COMMUNITY FOOD DRIVE

The Reading Curves is sponsoring its annual Food Drive.  Enclosed you will find a flyer with the information.  This is a good way for our school to be a part of a community event.  There will be a box in the front of the cafeteria for donations to be placed starting March 9th.

MRS. DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

FEBRUARY 26, 2009

,-.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Mardi Gras was wonderful!  The students milled around the building with prizes, hats, balloons, and enough smiles to make it all worthwhile.  Thank you to Parent’s Club and all the individuals who made it possible.  As always, the set up and clean up were quick and thorough.  Thank you.

SAFETY WARNINGS - two major areas of concern

WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL – Yesterday one of our students was walking home from school alone.  This student was approached and offered a ride by a man in his 40’s, with gray hair and a tan.  He was driving a dark colored 4 door car, with tinted windows.  I spoke to the students this morning about this incident so they are aware and cautious.  I feel it is important that you reiterate this point.  I also ask that children never walk to or from school alone.  We are a great school family and many people are willing to assist you transport your children if needed.

FACE BOOK ACCOUNTS

In light of the recent happenings with Face Book I ask that you speak to your children about the hazards of having a face book account.  What is put on Face Book is open to the public.  Many times our children do not recognize that some of the information or images placed on this site can be damaging to the individual or lead to your child being tracked to their home, school, or an outing that they casually mention or blog about.  I recommend that you open an account yourself so you can monitor the activity and information on your child(ren)’s site.  As parents you should have all pass-words for your child(ren)’s accounts.  This is not a private site.  Once you are in the account it is all public.

RECOGNITION FOR OUR STUDENTS UPO

We had three students represent our school in the local God, Flag and Country program held by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Reading.  We are proud of their accomplishments.  For the 10-11 year old age group Eric Conner received Honorable mention, 12-13 year old age group Erin Becker received 3rd place and 14-15 year old group Dariean Carnine received Honorable mention.  Good Job.

REGISTRATION 444

Thank you to those who have turned in your registrations.  I emphasize again the importance of an accurate account for planning.  Keep them coming, we are still missing several families.  Our school family is not complete without each one of you.  I look forward to hearing from you. J

MASS VVV

We have Mass scheduled for March 11th with Fr. Benzier and March 25th with Fr. Heim.  As always everyone is welcome.  Mark your calendars and join us to celebrate during this Lenten season.

OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED

An Open House is scheduled for Tuesday March 24 from 5:00-7:00PM.  Faculty, staff and board members will be on hand to answer questions and take new families on a tour of the building.  We are placing flyers in various preschools and other locations with pertinent information about our school and the Open House.  This is such a wonderful school.  I feel everyone needs to know about us.  Spread the word.

MARCH IS A VERY BUSY MONTH -  PLEASE NOTE SOME OF THE IMPORTANT EVENTS ON THE CALENDAR.

o        8TH GRADE CONFIRMATION AT THE CATHEDRAL

Your prayers and presence are welcome.  Congratulations!

o        2ND GRADE FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING

Your attendance models to your children the importance of our Catholic education and the Sacraments.

o        PARENT’S CLUB MEETING

Keep up to date on what’s happening.

STATE OF THE SCHOOL ADDRESS

March 18th 7:00.  Please make plans to attend this very important meeting.  The Board of Directors and I will present the State of our School Address.

The financial and academic health of the Academy will be presented and discussed at this time.  Your attendance is highly recommended.  You will receive 2 volunteer hours per family for your attendance.  If requested, childcare will be arranged.  (Please call if needed.)

Dear SPPA Parents,

The students had a great time on Valentine’s Day and are now looking forward to the Mardi Gras celebration.  I am also looking forward to this event since it will be my first SPPA Mardi Gras.  I lived in New Orleans for a while and experienced this event Creole/ Cajun style.  It is quite a party.  I am sure I will not be disappointed, given the events the Academy has sponsored so far this school year.  Hard working, dedicated and determined best describes all of you.  I continue to be amazed with the support you give each other and all of us.

CHARGER TIMES ON SALE IN NEWSSTANDS TODAY!!

Our first school newspaper is on sale starting today.  The cost of the paper is 25 cents.  Many thanks to Mrs. Carrizalles and Mrs. Cummins for their hard work with this endeavor.  Get your copy of the Charger Times to find out the best movies to rent, what Mardi Gras is all about, or a new meaning for Valentine’s Day from a 1st grades point of view in poetry.  Hats off to all the contributing writers.

CAMPBELL’S SOUP E-LABELS

It couldn’t be easier.  Campbell’s Soup has teamed up with Kroger to create an electronic version of Labels for Education.  The website is:   www.elabelsforeducation.com.  Sign up on line by entering your Kroger shopper card number and each time you purchase any Labels for Education item our school will automatically receive 1 point for each item.  Friends and family in other cities and states can also sign up and earn points for our school.  Simply go to the website and put in Sts. Peter and Paul Academy as the school of choice.  We need to continue to clip those labels as well.  We still get credit for sending them in.  For more information call Terri Kelsey at 554-2133.

MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION

Tuesday, February 24, is Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras.  (Read the school newspaper for the definition).  Sts. Peter and Paul Academy has a great celebration planned.  Students will be receiving  pizza, chips and a cupcake for lunch provided by Parent’s Club and will eat in their classrooms at 11:30.  (They will need their milk tokens)  The Mardi Gras celebration will begin at 12:00.

DON’T FORGET TO SEND IN MONEY FOR YOUR CHILDREN TO PURCHASE BOOTH TICKETS,  MAJOR PRIZE CHANCES AND CLASSROOM BASKETS.

o        Booth tickets are 8 for $1.00,

o        Major Award Chances are $1.00 each,

o        classroom basket tickets are 25 cents each.

Basket donations are still needed and must be turned in to room parents by tomorrow.  Room parents, you need to have the baskets turned in by Monday.  Workers are needed to help set up for this event Monday after school.  To work or for more information please call Missie Conner at 733-0327 or Julie Bronner at 733-8120.

MARKET DAY

Enclosed in this envelope you will find a Sweet Rewards Flyer from Market Day.  This is a great way to earn extra money for the Academy and satisfy your sweet tooth at the same time.  As stated on the flyer the more desserts we sell the more per item we earn.  For example, if we sell 249 pies or less the Academy would earn $1.75 per item.  If we sell 500 or more we earn $3.75 per \item.  $2.00 per item is a huge difference.   (Plus if you buy 3 desserts you receive a free insulated bag.) The Market Day order form will be coming out next week or you can order now online at marketday.com.

REGISTRATIONS AND BUDGETING

During the month of March we will start our orders for books for 09-10.  Without an accurate count of students we cannot order books.  It is imperative that you send in your registrations so we know what we need to order.  If the registration fee is a problem right now please send in your registration and call me to work out the details of the payment.  The registration fee will go toward the tuition for next year so it is not lost money.   We do accept Master Card and Visa for the registration.  A 3% fee for the total amount will be added to the registration fee if you choose this method of payment.

ASH WEDNESDAY

We will be attending noon Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church next week for Ash Wednesday.  Prior to the trip we will discuss with the children what to expect and appropriate behavior to and from the church as well as during the service.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Happy Valentine’s Day!  This is the time of year we think about all the ones we love and want to do special things for them to let them know.  The Student Council sponsored the Candy Grams to allow all of us the opportunity to express our feelings.  With all the heart ache in the world it is nice to know we have little things that are heart warming.  Everyone is excited about our Valentine parties scheduled for tomorrow. If you have a chance, feel free to drop by for the fun.

OUT OF UNIFORM – RED DAY (or pink and/or white)

Tomorrow, Friday 2-13-09, is an out of uniform day.  Each student pay will pay $1.00 to wear red.  Yes, Pink and white are allowed.  Do not go buy red if you do not have it.  Most of you probably have school spirit wear that is red.  That works.

o        Help with homework

o        Make up work

o        Etc.

Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Cummins and I will be sponsoring this club.  We will be assisted by some of our Junior High students.  This club is for all age levels.  The student tutors will assist the younger level students and the adults will help the older students.  Students will be recommended to the study club initially.  You will receive a note so you are aware that they will be staying after school.  The club time is from 2:45-3:45 meeting in Mrs. Kennedy’s room.   Forms will be sent home Monday for those who will be a part of this initiative.

Dear SPPA Parents,

Well, it happened again.  Thankfully, we were able to have a delay yesterday rather than miss a full day.  The snow amounts varied widely across the area leaving some of us with worse road conditions than others.  Five miles per hour on the highway can be frustrating and make for a very long commute.  It is now time for us to have some good weather.  Our Prayers go out to all those who are still without power in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky.

GOD, FLAG, AND COUNTRY CONTEST O O O

Our Junior High students all participated in a God, Flag and Country contest requiring them to write, memorize and present a speech about our God, our Flag and our country.  Congratulations to our winners this year:

o        10-11 year old age group – Eric Conner

o        12-13 year old age group – Erin Becker

o        14-15 year old age group – Dariean Carnine

These students will go on to compete on February 14th at the Reading Eagles Hall.

SPELLING BEE WINNER

Sts. Peter and Paul Academy held the annual Spelling Bee contest.   Congratulations to our winner Tom Finley.  Tom will be representing our school on February 14th in a district contest.  Good Luck Tom!

CHARACTER EDUCATION WINNERS

Congratulations to our Character Education winners for the month of January representing truthfulness.  Look for the signs in their front yards.

o        Joei Redwine

o        Tim Haunert

o        Jarrett Perry

The Character Education trait for February is Sensitivity.

2ND GRADE WINNERS

Our 2nd grade class won the Box Top contest for second quarter.  They are a competitive group of children led by a competitive faculty member.  (I think it is a well known fact that we have a competitive faculty always up for a challenge).  The 2nd grade will reap the rewards of their win next week.  Mrs. Cummins will fill you in on the details.

EMMA MITCH IS HONORED

Emma Mitch auditioned and was chosen to model in The  American Girl Fashion Show which is sponsored by the Aubrey Rose Foundation.  To date Emma and her family have raised over $600 for the Aubrey Rose Foundation.  If you would like to help out go to www.aubreyrose.org for more information or contact Jennifer.

HARTWELL PENN STATION LUNCH

Just a reminder about our lunch on Monday February 9th:  Hartwell Penn Station will be providing lunch for our entire school on Monday.  The students and faculty will be served a ham and cheese sandwich and chips.   Students will still need a drink.  Say a big thank you when you stop by their store.

VALENTINE’S DAY DANCE

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the Valentine’s Day Dance.  The dance will take place on February 14th at the Sts. Peter and Paul Bingo Hall.  Contact Debbie Scholz 821-2134 or Carrie Wolf 769-4610 for tickets and information.  If you cannot attend the dance your donation would be greatly appreciated.  All proceeds go directly back to the students at the Academy.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY  & & &

I would like to take a moment to talk about your children and their job as students.  Your children have a job to do. Their number one job, right now, is to be a student.  In a very competitive world economy for their future wellbeing, they need to understand that their academics are important.  Many of our students are involved in activities outside of school where coaches demand their best effort.  Those activities require their time and attention.  We support their endeavors.  However, our students, your children, need to understand that they are responsible for their school work first.  They may have aspirations of being professional athletes, professional dancers, gymnasts, etc.; those are wonderful dreams and should be pursued.  Those dreams will only be enhanced with a good education.  The faculty at Sts. Peter and Paul Academy is helping your children build a foundation for a lifetime of success. Less than their best work is not acceptable. Your children are the only ones who can be responsible for their work.  As students they need your encouragement, support, and sometimes a kick in the seat of the pants, but it is their job, their responsibility.

A NOTE REGARDING 2009-2010

As we continue to plan for the upcoming school year we want to continue to keep you updated as we go along as decisions are made.  Although we are continuing to investigate the possibility of returning to the old Parish School location the Academy will remain at the current location for 2009-2010.  We are very proud of our school and the current location serves our purpose very nicely.  Thanks to all of you, the building is always clean, in good repair, and full of happy children.  We are in the process of placing orders for books and supplies for next year.  It is critical that your registrations be turned in for a correct count for ordering.  If you have misplaced your registration please contact Mrs. Hubble for a replacement.

Dear SPPA Parents,

The cold weather has come with a vengeance.  We keep reminding students to wear their hats, gloves, scarves, and coats when going to and from school.  Plus they are instructed to wash their hands frequently to reduce the spread of the bugs that are going around.

We were hoping for a snow day today but some of us must have forgotten to wear our pajamas in-side out last night.  However, we know we are blessed to have the privilege of attending school each day.

WANTED – TALENTED SPPA STUDENTS

Boys and girls – this is your time to shine.  If you are afraid to perform alone, get a friend to share the spotlight with you.  The talent show is 2 weeks away, you still have time to prepare and share your God given talent.  The preview will be Friday 1-23.

MRS. TERESA RILEY

It is with regret that I inform you that Mrs. Teresa Riley has resigned from her position as the Physical Education Teacher.  It indeed has been a pleasure having her in the gym adding the flare that only she could add.  Mrs. Riley will be missed by the faculty and students.  We wish her the very best in her new venture.

Dear SPPA Families,

I hope this finds everyone well rested and prepared for a wonderful new year.  We are off to a busy start preparing for the end of 2nd quarter, calculating grades for the report cards and Catholic Schools Week.

I want to take this time to officially thank Mrs. Schreck and the primary teachers and students for all their hard work preparing the Christmas play and the 4th through 8th grade teachers and students for your assistance with the singing finale.  Of course, a special’ thank you’ to all of you for allowing us to work with your children to create a fabulous Christmas Program.  “It takes a village to raise a child”.  I forget who said that but it is very true.

THANK YOU

Although I do not know all the names of all the elves we had in here working over the Christmas Break, I would like to say thank you to each person who contributed to the waxing of the floors and thorough cleaning of the building.  I do know Tom Burke was here countless hours heading the effort.  (Which probably means Nikki and the kids were here also with mops and brooms!)  Thank you to everyone.

A special thank you to all the people who attended the meeting last night regarding the future of the Academy.  It was an opportunity for parents to speak what was in their heart about the present location of the Academy versus the location at the old Sts. Peter and Paul School by the Parish.  The state of the Academy’s finances was also presented so everyone is aware that all decisions will be made based on our economic health.  Your continued hard work in the fund raising department is crucial to avoid dipping into reserves.

MRS DONNELLY’S NEWSLETTER

December 4, 2008

.-,

Dear SPPA Parents,

We are celebrating Advent each Monday with the lighting of a candle and daily readings in anticipation of the celebration of the birth of Jesus.  We are also decorating the Jesse Tree with symbols of the true story of Christmas.  It is an exciting time of year for children.  As the days pass it becomes more difficult for them to focus on their academics.  The celebration of Advent and the Jesse Tree help keep them grounded and in touch with why we are all here; to nurture the spiritual formation of each child while educating the whole child.

MASS DAY CHANGED  VV

Please change your calendar.  The Mass for next week has been changed from Wednesday to Friday 12-12-08.  The time will remain the same at 1:45 in the afternoon.  Fr. Rob Jack will be here to celebrate the Mass with us.  Please make plans to join us.  Ms. Hesse’s Kindergarten class is planning this Mass with the assistance of Mrs. Carrizales.

TUITION LETTER

Please take time to read the enclosed letter regarding tuition for the 2009-2010 school year.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM  TTT

Dear SPPA Parents,

Mrs. Hubble is advising you to put your slippers on, grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable.  There is a lot of information in this newsletter that you need to know.  In all seriousness, please take the time to look at each individual flyer that is included and read each segment of the newsletter.  It is best to act on the information as soon as it is received or it gets put into stack and forgotten.  (I must admit that happens at my house) You are such an important part of Sts. Peter and Paul Academy.  It is important that you stay informed.

FITNESS FUN

Join us Tuesday 11-25 for a ‘Dance Off’ between the 5th through 8th grade classes.  K-4 will also be performing but not competing.  The fun starts at 1:15.  They have all been working very hard.

PARENTS CLUB

Parent’s Club has a couple of things going on that benefit both you as parents and your children as beneficiaries of your hard work.  First: a reminder that the Poinsettia sale is still going on.  The sale ends Monday, December 1st.  So far we have only had one order turned in.  The poinsettias are beautiful for you to display in your home and they make a wonderful gift.  Go back to your stack and find the order form.  Or call the office to get another one.J  Next, Parent’s Club has the opportunity to work the concession stand for VYO to earn money for SPPA.  Please take a look at the enclosed flyer.  It is a good thing!

SCRIPT ORDERS

Once again we have the opportunity to do some of our Christmas Shopping through SPPA.  The Script Order forms are enclosed for your convenience.  If your plan to purchase gift cards for you family and friends, SPPA is the place to shop.  Again, it serves double duty, a gift purchased and money earned for SPPA.

REMINDER FOR THE JINGLE BELL SHOP

Please turn in all the crafts you have been working on for the Jingle Bell shop as soon as possible so we know how much we have and what we may need.  Thanks for your help.

CLEANING SCHEDULE 11-24 through 11-28

Lichtenberg and Madsen

MARKET DAY

Market Day has a special event going on this time that can benefit you and the school.  Last week you received a flyer for cookie dough.  This is a good fundraiser for the school.  A little explanation may help you decide to give a tub of cookie dough as a gift especially to someone with sweet tooth.  For each tub of cookie dough we sell the school receives $2.00.  However, if we sell 250 or more we would receive $3.00 per tub.  So our goal is an aggressive sales number of 250.  At your Thanksgiving gatherings you can entice those around you to purchase for a good cause. For your convenience we are enclosing another Cookie Dough Flyer inside the normal Market Day Flyer.  The pick up date for all orders is December 8th.

SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

Now that cold weather has arrived we need to be aware of the “No Idle” policy enacted as a result of Jarod’s Law that was passed last year.   When you arrive in the afternoon to pick up your children you should not sit with your vehicle idling for longer than 5 minutes.  This policy was sent home at the beginning of the year and a copy is on file in the office.  If you have any questions please give me a call.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Student Council has joined the gift giving spirit of Christmas by having a “Penny War” between the classes.  Please read the enclosed flyer for information about the event.  All proceeds go to the Giving Tree Family from Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

ADVENT

The First Sunday of Advent is November 30th.  We will be celebrating Advent each day by reading about the events of Advent and placing ornaments on the Jesse Tree.  This will be our morning prayer routine during the month of December.  Feel free to join us if you have a few extra morning minutes.

HELP NEEDED TO HELP FEED THE FAMILIES IN THE VALLEY

Sts. Vincent de Paul Society and Sts. Peter and Paul Parish  would appreciate any donations from SPPA to assist with meeting the needs of many families in our area.  Please read the enclosed purple flyer for more information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

As a cost saving measure to our families, we are going to start using cloth towels to clean in the cafeteria.  This is also a tree saving measure because it will greatly reduce the number of paper towels we will use.   As a result of this change we will need someone to volunteer to wash the towels each week.  This will give you 2 volunteers hour per week.  (WHICH MEANS - We need donations of kitchen or shop towels.  If you are interested in donating some towels please call Brenda.  Thank you in advance.)

We also need some one to volunteer to wash the mop heads and dust mop heads.  Dust mops would only need to be cleaned once a month.  The mop heads need it weekly.  This would also give you 2 volunteer hours per week.  The mop heads do have to be washed individually.

September 18th

School at Sts. Peter and Paul Academy has continued pretty much as usual this week. After the wind storm and power outage on Sunday, the Academy was not without power. School was canceled on Monday, September 15th because the school was being considered for a shelter for those who did not have electric. When the City decided that because of moderate temperatures and weather conditions, that they did not need the building as a shelter, school was back in session on Tuesday, Sept. 16th with a one hour delay.

The one hour delay continues throughout this week of school, so that those students who are still without electric, may be able to get ready for school by daylight.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Donnelly at 761-7772.

Also, Market Day pick-up was rescheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18th. You may pick-up your items at the Academy Cafeteria at 7:15pm.
